Programme Management Officer – Climate Adaptation

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Programme Management Officer to support the Climate Change Adaptation Unit in Nouakchott, Mauritania. The incumbent will work within the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development to strengthen ecosystem and population resilience across four regional hubs.

Key responsibilities

• Support delivery of project objectives, building on previous adaptation planning efforts.
• Provide technical guidance, identify interventions, and consult with stakeholders.
• Review and analyse country‑specific development plans, socioeconomic data and related reports.
• Ensure compliance with UNEP financial and administrative rules and coordinate with the Finance Officer.
• Assist in budgeting, resource programming, and expenditure forecasting.
• Undertake field missions to provide technical coaching, monitor progress, and propose solutions to challenges.

Required profile

• Experience in project management, preferably in climate adaptation or environmental programmes.
• Ability to work closely with government ministries, partners and UN stakeholders.
• Familiarity with UNEP policies, financial regulations and reporting procedures.
• Strong analytical skills for reviewing development plans and socioeconomic data.
