About the role
The World Bank is seeking a Mining Specialist to support its Metals and Minerals portfolio in Mauritania and the wider West African region. Based in the Nouakchott country office, the specialist will contribute to policy dialogue, technical assistance, and the implementation of mining‑related lending operations.
Key responsibilities
- Collaborate with global and regional teams to develop sector strategies and provide upstream policy advice.
- Provide technical input on data management, permitting processes, and environmental and social considerations.
- Monitor and report on project implementation progress, including the Mauritania DREAMS project.
- Conduct analytical work to inform strategic planning and territorial development in key mining regions.
- Support the design and execution of country compacts and integration of infrastructure planning into mineral value‑chain development.
Required profile
- Master’s degree or higher in a mining‑related discipline (e.g., Geology, Mining Engineering, Mineral Economics) or a related field such as finance or policy.
- At least five years of relevant experience in the mining sector.
- Demonstrated understanding of mining industry issues, project management and data analysis.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and French.
- Ability to work independently and sensitively in multicultural environments.
